The name of this quilt has as much to do with the back as with the front. I wanted to make a quilt for a friend who was going through a hard time, and thought the rainbow strips would cheer her up. When it came time to choose the back, I looked around at my stash and realized that this grey fabric looked a lot like raindrops falling on water -- which also reminded me of teardrops. It seemed to be the perfect backing because it would say to my friend "I understand your tears, and I also want to reassure you that there will be happiness when this is past." I had words of encouragement quilted into the sashing. No matter what fabrics you use or who you make it for, it is very simple and fun to make! The rainbow strips can even be a small carry-along hand-piecing project (I pieced mine while commuting on the New York City subway). Skill Level: Easy Finished size: 61” x 72”

was inspired by a trip to Yosemite National Park. The idea came to me while hiking to Yosemite Falls, and I first sketched it in the sand on the bank of the Merced River that evening. Merced Sunset was in the "Traditional Treasures" exhibit at the International Quilt Festival in Chicago, April 2006, and the "In the American Tradition" exhibit at the International Quilt Festival in Houston, Fall 2006, then toured until Summer 2007. How often have you seen a quilt in a show and thought "I wish there was a pattern for that"? Well, this time there is! Pattern includes quilt (finished size: 54" x 54") and table runner (finished size: 20" x 54"). Quilt kit includes fabric for top and binding. Table Runner kit includes fabric for top, binding and backing.

"Spinning Out, Spinning In" by Helen Remick. Helen's gorgeous quilt -- which features the first Radiant Collection fabrics -- won the top prize in the "New Quilts from an Old Favorite" competition sponsored by the Museum of the American Quilt Society this year (2007). Helen used the Large Starburst fabric (BTR-3761, color Hunter) very much in the way I imagined it, fitting the radiating lines into the corners of the triangles and graduating the tones. In her words: "The quilt would have been far less effective without your fabric -- as you planned, the fabric called out to be used in the triangles. I enjoyed finding just the right placement in the design."
Helen, thanks for a beautiful quilt and congratulations on winning!
Helen's quilt is featured on the cover of "Rose of Sharon: New Quilts from an Old Favorite" Published by the American Quilt Society.

Has anyone seen Shirley Stutz's new book Easy Elegant Lone Star Quilts: All the WOW Without Work! (from C&T Publishing). She showed one of these quilts made of Navy Radiant Collection fabrics in her class at Quilt Market in Houston, and it looked TERRIFIC! Nice job, Shirley! |

THANK YOU!!
